Coxibs - COX-2 Inhibitors

Coxibs (also known as COX-2 inhibitors) are a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Coxibs, like other NSAIDs, relieve the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, they are also indicated for period pain and short-term use for post-operative pain.

They are sometimes also known as ‘selective NSAIDs‘ because they act only on the COX-2 enzyme, rather than both COX-1 and COX-2 like the non-selective NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and diclofenac. The coxibs were developed to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal side effects associated with non-selective NSAIDs.
